What is bereavement?

Bereavement is the experience of losing someone important to us. It is characterised by grief, which is the process and the range of emotions we go through as we gradually adjust to the loss.

What does bereavement look like?

  • Anxiousness

  • Sad

  • Withdrawn

  • Lonely

  • Angry

  • Guilty

  • Numb

  • Physically unwell

  • Unable to sleep or concentrate

What to do if a child discloses bereavement

  • Alert your DSL team at the earliest opportunity available

  • Inform the Learning Manager of the child

  • The child may feel guilt so reassure this is a common feeling but is in no way their fault or responsibility

  • Be non-judgemental about how they're feeling

How to support a child through bereavement

  • Encourage normal routines to be maintained

  • Encourage the child to continue things they enjoy doing

  • Remind them of the support services available

  • Encourage the child to express how they're feeling

It is important to note that everyone grieves in different ways. Grief is a personal issue and everyone is different, therefore it is imperative that a non-judgemental approach is taken when discussing the loss of a loved one with a child.
