What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be mild or severe.

Everyone has feelings of anxiety at some point in their life. For example, you may feel worried and anxious about sitting an exam, or having a medical test or college interview.

During times like these, feeling anxious can be perfectly normal.

But some people find it hard to control their worries. Their feelings of anxiety are more constant and can often affect their daily lives.

What does anxiety look like?

  • Feelings of panic or fear - excessive worrying

  • Inability to stay still or calm

  • Muscle tension

  • Breathing issues or rubbing of hands

  • Difficulties in sleeping

  • Constant thirst/dry mouth

  • Numbness in hands/feet

  • Feelings of sickness

Causes of anxiety


  • Past/Childhood experiences

  • Exhaustion or a build up of stress

  • Feeling under pressure while studying

  • Losing someone close to you

  • Feeling lonely or isolated

  • Being bullied, harrassed or abused

  • Physical and mental health problems

  • Drugs and medication

  • Learn how to set goals and self-monitor

  • Deep breathing exercises

  • Learn how to organise, plan and execute tasks effectively

  • Set up an exercise routine

  • Encourage 'opening up' or talking to a trusted person
